Yesterday there was a Hawfinch mooching around in the Warden’s garden, a first for Ramsey island! They are the largest of the finches, dwarfing a chaffinch, but also possibly one of the most shy. They exert a bite force of about 50kg (similar to that of a human) which is a pressure more than a thousand times greater than its own weight. This means they can use there bill to crack open things such as cherry and olive stones. So incredibly lucky to have seen it!
